Aphidius colemani is a parasitic wasp that controls over 40 aphid species including the green peach aphid (Myzus persicae), the cotton aphid (Aphis gossypii), and the tobacco aphid (M. p. nicotianae). Aphidius inserts an egg into the body of its host aphid, and as the wasp pupates, the aphid gradually turns into a hardened mummy, usually golden-brown in colour. The adult Aphidius female is able to lay up to 200 eggs during a lifetime of just a couple days and are able to locate individual aphids, making them a great preventative option. Please note that intensive crop de-leafing will hamper the establishment of the Aphidius population, since mummies are attached to the leaf.
