The Heterorhabditis bacteriophora nematodes can be used to control black vine weevil larvae (Otiorhynchus salcatus), and cranberry root weevil adults (Anthonmus musculus), Japanese beetle, as well as several varieties of chafer beetle (European, garden, welsh, and summer). They carry symbiotic bacteria, which is harmless to humans, and once they enter their host the bacteria quickly kill the insect allowing the nematodes to feed and reproduce in their new habitat. The insect dies within three days, and 2-3 weeks later up to 300,000 new nematodes may emerge from one infested host. It only takes 2-3 infective juveniles to kill the insect, and if conditions are favourable, they will persist in the soil and continue to control the pest throughout the season.
